As Kolkata's renowned General Post Office (GPO) approaches its 250th anniversary, preparations are underway for a memorable celebration of its rich history and legacy. Established on March 31, 1774, at Fort William under the governance of Lord Warren Hastings, the GPO has undergone several relocations before finding its permanent residence in the present iconic building, which opened its doors to the public on October 2, 1868.

Serving as a cornerstone of Kolkata's postal infrastructure and heritage, the GPO holds immense historical significance, symbolizing the evolution of postal services in the region. In honor of its milestone anniversary, the Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle, unveiled a special logo, signaling the commencement of a week-long festivity from March 14 to March 19, 2024, at the GPO premises. The celebration will feature a range of events, including philatelic and postal exhibitions, along with unique experiences like tram rides originating from Howrah and special carriage covers, inviting the public to partake in commemorating the GPO's enduring legacy and contributions to Kolkata's cultural landscape.
